How can you start learning digital marketing in 2020?

When you learn and do things practically the information in the brain is reinforced and understood properly. And when you teach you are forced to go ahead and put things in your mind in the most simplistic way.
Einstein once said, “If you cannot teach it in an easy to learn way, you haven’t understood the concepts properly.” So, the best way to grow as a digital marketer is to learn digital marketing, then apply whatever you have learned and then teach it to the people.

When you learn Digital Marketing, always remember you need to learn ‘Marketing’ first. Marketing is all about selling yourself, your products and your brand by effective communication with your audience. When you are good at communicating yourself and your ideas with your audience, you become a good marketer. When you apply these principles in digital world, it will make you a better digital marketer. Learning the technicalities of digital marketing will make you sound technical but you won’t be a good digital marketer unless you master the art of marketing.
The basic key skill you need to master in digital marketing is COMMUNICATION.
It helps in every aspect of your life. Whether you want to sell something, you want clients or you want a job, communication is the most important skill to master.
Here are some ways to master your communication skills:-
- Read a lot. Readout loud newspapers, blogs and books on a daily basis.
- Write a lot. Whatever you have in mind. Write it down on a piece of paper. Best would be to start a blog and write down your thoughts.
- Listen to podcasts. Search for podcasts related to the topics you are interested in and listen to that.
I personally joined a call center (U.S. process) to improve my communication & English speaking skills. So if you have that option, go for it. The purpose is to improve communication and not earn.
Here is how the Digital marketing works:
Whole Digital Marketing revolves around the content. You Write content, Share it on social media and you get some traffic. You also do SEO and paid advertising to get more traffic on the content. Once you have traffic, you can build your email list and publish more content to keep visitors engaged and providing them the value. Eventually, some of your email subscribers will become your customers.
Once you decide to work as a digital marketer, the first step is to decide your niche.
The biggest mistake done by most of the people when they enter into digital marketing is that they try to become an all-rounder and cater to all markets and niches. This way they lose all their value.
A specialist always has more value than a generalist. For eg., a neurosurgeon always charges more than a general physician.
So you need to be an expert in one niche rather than being an all-rounder.
These are the biggest markets to enter into:-
- Money
- Health
- Relationships
But these are very broad markets. You need to find your niche in these markets. Try to find your micro-niche and be specific about your target audience.
For eg.:If you choose the money niche, you can narrow it down by going into specifics like online course creation, drop shipping, Affiliate marketing, etc. You can further narrow it down for eg. affiliate marketing for digital products or drop shipping for household items.
Similarly, if you are in the health niche, you can narrow it down by going into sub-niches like weight loss, strength training and further narrow it down into diet for weight loss, exercise for weight loss, gym training for muscles, yoga for weight loss, etc. You can even further narrow it down like ‘weightloss with yoga for pregnant woman’
While deciding your niche there are 3 things you must keep in mind:-
- You should have a passion or interest in the niche.
- You should have knowledge about the topic or should be willing to learn about it.
- There should be a market demand of your product.
You need to be the best in whatever your niche is, to build a brand. You can narrow down the niche to an extent so that you become number 1.
Now the question is how can you find if there is a demand in your niche. Well, there are several ways:-
- Google Autosuggest – Type your keyword in Google search and look at the words coming up in suggestions. These are the words people are searching for on google. So there is a demand for all those topics.
- Answer the public – You can type in your question in answerthepublic.com and you will get a bunch of suggestions for the keywords and questions people are searching for on the web.
That leads us to the next topic i.e PERSONAL BRANDING
It is vital to become a personal brand so that you become a go-to person for everyone in your targeted niche. Now, the question is how can you do that?
You need to stand out from the crowd and put your thoughts and personality on social media. If you are an introvert or a shy person like me, it is difficult to do that. We keep on thinking what others will think of us and what if people start trolling and making fun. But we must conquer our fears to stand out and start publishing content in the form of text, images and videos.
Initially, we can start with sharing some quotes of famous people and then adding our own thoughts.
Once you start getting traction, you will love the process. Now, what are the benefits of personal branding?
- You become a celebrity in your niche. It feels very good when people recognize you.
- You become a leader in your community of like-minded people and people will listen to you.
- Whether you want a job or start your own company, it always helps you as a personal brand.
There is one more important concept in digital marketing i.e. FUNNELS
In digital marketing, a Funnel is a process through which a customer has to go through. You put cold audience in a funnel who has never heard of you and some percentage of that becomes your customer at the funnel end.
How do Funnels work?
- Start publishing free content. Give something valuable to your audience in return for their email id. It can be either an Ebook, Checklist, Video series etc.
- Follow up using an automated email sequence that will build a relationship with your audience. Now the audience is war. They know who you are and what is your message.
- Then you can introduce them to your paid program. Some of the warm audience will become your customers.
You have to repeat this process over and over again.
